‘The Starry Love’: Ep. 33 Recap — Not Manman!

You know what happens when a romance comedy starts taking itself too seriously? The audience will be forced to apply logic to the story, which there hasn’t been a lot of.

EPISODE 33

Wedding time. Ziwu and Manman cry in the face of so much happiness.

Dilanjue and Husui are there too.

Youqin and Yetan refuse to go with the usual rituals and do it their own way. Nope, no bowing to their elders or to heaven and earth, they are too cool for that. They just bow to each other and exchange wedding vows.

By the way… what is Youqin wearing?

The Void Queen has been locked up these days, but her annoying assistant with a hoarse voice — whose name I refuse to learn — is still creeping around and making trouble.

He offers to kill Qingkui and Yetan to avenge Dingyun. The Void Queen agrees and transfers some of her powers to him.

He finds the gang and concocts a plan to lure Youqin and Chaofeng away.

Because Chaofeng and Youqin have just opened a business in the city, they’re eager to see customers, so Hoarse Voice has his men pretend to be customers, which makes Chaofeng and Youqin dash away.

But as they receive these “customers”, Youqin realizes that they all have scars and look suspicious. So immediately he tells Chaofeng to stop and run back home because the girls might be in danger.

This is one of the moments where the drama could have been more consistent with these characters. Youqin is book-smart, Chaofeng is street-smart. If one of them can recognize potential threats by observing people, it should be Chaofeng, who is more used to detecting lies and dealing with duplicity. Youqin locked himself up in one place his entire life, where did he get this kind of experience?

The girls are in grave danger indeed. Hoarse Voice attacks and in short, he kills Manman.

There is no more help to be had and the girls are clearly no match for Hoarse Voice.

Husui takes out a magic stick and waves. Magic encases Qingkui and Yetan and suddenly they have powers.

With their powers, they push Hoarse Voice back.

Chaofeng and Youqin show up just in time to watch the villain escape. Thanks.

Yetan loses it over Manman’s death. To be honest, we all do, it’s Manman!

Husui begins to tell them all about the two princesses’ origin.

To summarize it all: they are not human. They are plants. Yeah. Part of a sacred tree that belonged to an ancient clan that has been vanquished by the last Heaven King and Void King due to the fear that their power may release a force of evil.

Yes, the most carefree and innocent character has died. The female protagonists find out they have secret awesome powers and came from a clan that has no building-up whatsoever. Expositions from a character that barely plays a part in this story, telling us we should care about said clan. I’d say this is a very good point to drop the drama if we want to remember it as the fun and heartwarming comedy it has been.
