‘Princess Pearl 2’: Ep. 38 Recap — Blessing in Disguise

EPISODE 38

After the Ziwei crisis, everyone goes out for some fresh air. They have so much fun that even Erkang and Xiaoyanzi tell each other jokes. It was going to be a picnic of some sort, but before long, they get attacked!

This time, a whole bunch of men jump out to surround them and these are a lot more violent than the ones they encountered last time.

The gang fights but even with Xiaojian’s help, they get hurt pretty badly. Mostly because they are still unwilling to fight for real. The kids think these men are sent by the emperor, you see, and they just don’t want to hurt people who are only following orders.

But when Erkang gets stabbed in the chest and Yongqi takes a hit on his wrist, Xiaojian is like: ok that’s it! I’m gonna fight with my sword! Because he’s been fighting with only his flute up to this point.

Erkang and Yongqi too begin to fight with all they have.

They end up defeating the men in black, but Erkang gets it pretty bad this time. He falls unconscious and Ziwei is more miserable than ever that she can’t see. She suggests that maybe they should just surrender the next time men in black appear to avoid more injuries.

There’s an even more serious problem. This incident makes all of them bewildered because — how could the emperor treat them this way? Like, the fishing net was acceptable, but a fight to this ambush was just too ruthless.

From what we learn from the emperor himself, however, it seems those men in black were not acting on his order. Hmmmm… not the emperor’s men; wanting to kill the kids; who could it be, one wonders.

The emperor is actually trying to get in touch with them through peaceful means. Another thing that gets revealed here is: the emperor never intended to let the two girls be beheaded. Someone was waiting on the side that day to appeal on their behalf.

In an inn, because Ziwei can’t see, the others have to tend to Erkang. It’s kind of weird seeing Xiaoyanzi take care of Erkang.

At one point, they try to make Ziwei eat some dinner… with chopsticks? I mean, in a miserable situation like this, why not let Ziwei use a spoon to make life easier for her?

Anyway, when Erkang calls for her, Ziwei trips and knocks the whole food tray over.

Ziwei cries and blames herself for being so useless.

This time, Xiaojian has a new idea: he doesn’t play his flute anymore and suggests that Ziwei should play her zither to keep their spirit up.

Small note: the song Ziwei plays here sounds very different from the ones she played in Season 1. It’s a good song, but a little… too modern for this setting I guess. It discusses romance pretty openly and rather without subtlety.

Ziwei keeps singing and playing till morning. Erkang wakes up and asks for water. Ziwei rushes to get him some right away. *GASPS*

What’s going on? Erkang is so shocked he completely forgets about his injuries. Ziwei can see again? Ziwei can see again!

Ziwei, you see, has been so worried about Erkang that she doesn’t even realize she is able to see again. Such loooove. Or maybe it’s because, you know, Ziwei didn’t have time to adjust to being blind before her eyes became normal again so she just didn’t pay attention.

Now, the reason for this? It could be because Ziwei hit her head in that brothel, which cancels out the hit she got when she fell from the carriage. It could be that emotional shocks just came to her one after another and that affected her ability to see. Or perhaps heaven has been listening to Erkang’s pleas and yelling all this time and decided it’s better to stop testing him.

How it happened doesn’t matter anymore, what matters is our girl Ziwei is alive again.

Except for the terrible dinner Xiaoyanzi makes them eat that evening, things are starting to look up for the gang. I mean, if they all still decide to try her food after it made Yongqi look like this, it’s kind of on them.
