EPISODE 32 RECAP
The kids all bow to Lord and Lady Fu and head out the next morning, embracing their grand new life. With that same bright@$$ carriage.
In the palace, we are shown that the emperor knows his kids more than anyone. When the court officials suggest that they may have divided into groups to stay hidden better, the emperor counters right away that there’s no way in friggin hell the gang is going to separate due to their oaths to each other.
The emperor also points out that they won’t be hiding in isolated, barren places; young and poetic people like them would seek out beautiful landscapes to settle down. Which is also true.
He tells his officials very clearly not to hurt or startle the kids, though. An order I’m pretty sure will be very hard to carry out, given their fight-or-flight tendencies.
Now, what does the gang do with their first day of freedom? Save a girl from being burnt at the stake and then squander their own money to sponsor a wedding for that girl and her lover.
The heroic act is initiated by Xiaoyanzi — as always — and finished gloriously by Erkang.
Good deeds aside, I don’t think these kids understand the meaning of “laying low” yet.
Xiaojian, the only one who sees something wrong with this, gently calls Erkang out for wasting money and reminds them all that they’re on the run, not on vacation. Though I gotta say, I’m loving this new “big sworn family” vibe from them.
Later on, Erkang and Ziwei have a brief talk.
They comment on the pair of lovers they ran into in the morning and give us audience another preachy promise that they will always stay together. Like we need that assurance by this point. But hey, you’re not Erkang and Ziwei unless you project yourselves onto everyone’s romance and create poems out of it.
The group begin to head towards their dream city: Dali. Lots and lots of cute moments on the way, but the biggest news is: it looks like Liu Qing is beginning to make his move on Jinsuo. Guys… I think we’re about to be free of Jinsuo’s whining forever.
Once they arrive at the next town, Xiaoyanzi starts to cause trouble. It has to start at some point, I guess.
She leaves the group to go watch a cockfight, dragging Yongqi into a fistfight with some of the gamblers there. They win, and Xiaoyanzi even brings home a rooster as a prize. This is where they kind of mess up Xiaoyanzi’s character by making her into an irresponsible airhead, but it’s still tolerating so far. I just hope she contributes more to the group than just chaos.
