‘You are My Glory’: Ep. 1 – 5 Recap — Beauty and… Beauty

You are My Glory is a very simple, relaxing, and… normal drama. It’s meant to be watched in a cozy room with a cup of warm tea. Or you can watch it as a reset drama after seeing something heavy or too mind-boggling like, er, Jiuchen’s plan to save the world.

I will be mini-recapping this drama five episodes at a time just for fun. As usual, I don’t plan to go into too much detail but will only highlight what stands out the most.

Here we go.

EPISODE 1 – 5 RECAPS

Let’s get to know the main protagonists.

The male lead, Yu Tu — played by the other Yehua Yang Yang. A charismatic and academic man who works at an aerospace station. He’s efficient but constantly broods about something. Don’t they all?

On the other hand, our leading lady Qiao Jingjing (Dilraba Dilmurat). She’s an actress/model/singer. Extremely popular and loved by her fans.

Everything is sugary and glorious so far, especially Jingjing’s apartment and lifestyle. This woman has people delivering food to her place daily while she plays games!

Jingjing has a problem, though. She uses her popularity to endorse a video game, but then it’s discovered that she herself doesn’t play that game very well. For ordinary people, it wouldn’t be a problem, you can love a game and still suck at it. Everyone loves the Sims but I bet not a lot of you can last for long without “motherlode”.

But for a celebrity… tsk, tsk. This little incident is not good for the game company’s publicity or hers, especially in these days when internet trolls rule the world.

So Jingjing’s team comes up with a plan for damage control: to train her for a month and let her prove her skills to her fans. Otherwise, she could be removed from the game’s list of endorsers. Yep, people, it’s a life-and-death situation.

Now, while strolling around the game’s platform, battling strangers to improve her skills, Jingjing runs into Yu Tu.

Here’s a little backstory: Jingjing used to have a crush on Yu Tu when they were in high school together. She even asked him out but he said no, being a career boy who looks too good in his letterman jacket and all that.

But alas, Jingjing still habors her little crush on Yu Tu even now. So her game plan now also includes meeting Yu Tu again.

Because Yu Tu is a man of integrity, dignity, beauty, modesty and… whatever else he has, Jingjing has to tread carefully. She tries everything to spark his interest: asking him to train her, pretending to buy an air purifier from his company and complaining about it, etc.

After a lot of scheming, she finally gets Yu Tu to come out of his place and walk to hers, under the impression that he would be fixing her air purifier.

They meet again in the lobby and, *gasps*, it’s a “who is this exquisite creature” moment for both of them. Before that, Jingjing was a little afraid that he had become a chubby and bald old man after so many years of excessive reading and building Lego rockets or whatever, but hello! He is still thin and his hair is fine.

I wouldn’t call this exciting, but it’s good in a slow and peaceful way. As in, you don’t have to worry something crazy is going to happen to either of them.

Jingjing chats up Yu Tu and the next thing we know, he agrees to train her to play that game in person every day until her deadline.

At some point during those training sessions, we get a long shot of Yu Tu’s finger swiping Jingjing’s phone. I guess the drama is trying to say that even Yang Yang’s fingers are ethereal? I don’t know, but it was a really long scene.

Some things are revealed as Jingjing and Yu Tu catch up. We now know that Jingjing used to briefly date a guy who is definitely a snob.

And Yu Tu? He is a valued member of his company, but his work is no longer fulfilling to him. He views himself as a failure because it feels like he’s behind most of his friends. Even though he knows his worth, he still feels pressured when confronted by his friends’ success. That’s why he broods all the time, and you know what? This is a reason for brooding I can accept.

Yu Tu used to date someone too, but they have broken up. But even she seems to be in a surer place than him career-wise.

By the end of episode 5, Yu Tu delivers the bombshell news to Jingjing: he’s thinking about quitting his space dream. Noooo… Jingjing’s heart breaks for him.

COMMENTS

So like I mentioned before, this is a drama to chill with.

There’s nothing wrong with it so far. All the characters are just comfortable and pleasant and… pretty, I guess.

I’ve heard many horror stories about Yang Yang’s acting and I’ve also seen that little noddle dance he does in the movie Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms, so I totally expected him to do some damage here; but it turns out, he hasn’t yet. The role of Yu Tu requires him to be quiet and reflective most of the time with good postures, and so far he is doing just that.

Dilmurat is as lovely as this role requires. About her character, putting aside the fact that she’s out-of-this-world beautiful, let’s see: scrolling mindlessly, embarrassing memories in high school, constantly checking out people’s reaction to whatever dumb thing someone just said on your social board, playing games before bedtime — I’d say she’s very relatable.

  1. This is awesome. I rewatch this drama whenever I’m on long flights, but I’ve never seen the first 18 episodes (maybe 14?). I’m happy that I can “watch” them through you. You are so right about the vibe of this cdrama. Please post on YouTube when you update. Do you think you make a video about it?
