‘The Starry Love’: Ep. 8 Recap — Qingkui Gains an Admirer

Quippe: Youqin’s mom is the standard for all drama moms.

Dew: Her only “selfish” thought is that she wants her son, the perfect Empyrean, to just be her son.

EPISODE 8

Before the match begins, Qingkui asks Wudai to let her prick him with her needles. Thinking this is just to hurt him before the fight, Wudai agrees and lies down to be a pin cushion for a while.

Of course, we all know it is acupuncture that Qingkui is performing on him. She paralyzes his muscles and just when it looks like he’s about to punch her, he collapses at her feet.

I live for the sound effects of this drama’s comedic moments. You never know when a dramatic moment is going to turn into a 90’s cartoon, slapstick humor style.

Phew, nobody is more relieved than Chaofeng, he was about to strike Wudai there to save her. But he is also super impressed by her. Look at that unbidden proud smile.

The next day, Wudai barges into Qingkui’s place and rips off his shirt. Huh…

EVERYONE: Murder!

But it turns out, Wudai only wants Qingkui to experiment some more on him with her needles. He wants to know more about mortal medicine. Seems like Wudai is a lot more innocent than he looks.

Chaofeng rushes over, thinking that Wudai is about to beat up Qingkui.

When the two men start to quarrel, Qingkui makes things clear. She refuses to experiment on Wudai and asks Chaofeng to understand that whatever she did for him was out of gratitude, so he shouldn’t fight with his brother on her behalf.

Just gratitude? Chaofeng’s enormous pride is hurt. All those flirty smiles and fake punches in his face earned him no more than “gratitude”, hah.

A bit later, Chaofeng plays a prank on Wudai. He asks Wudai to teach him some martial arts moves. But because Chaofeng has always been better than Wudai, he manages to hurt Wudai while making it look like an accident.

Qingkui doesn’t like it. She interferes and splashes some potion on Chaofeng, which turns him into Shrek.

It’s not attractive.

Let’s just take a moment to remember that this is the same girl who was shaking in her boots in front of the Void’s entrance. Qingkui is thriving in this Shrek’s swamp.

In the Heaven Realm, Yetan follows Youqin around, asking him to remove the “spying eyes” he placed on her now that she has passed the school test, but Youqin still doesn’t trust that she will behave yet.

But a promise is a promise, Yetan doesn’t intend to let Youqin off until he undoes that magic. It’s not a nice thing to do to your future wife, anyway, Youqin.

She trails and spies on him, moves into his private residence, ambushes him in the bathroom, and makes him slip out embarrassing things in front of his subordinates.

Taking a little break from watching Youqin get harassed, we see Qingheng running into Husui again. He’s sad he hasn’t been able to see her in class but it turns out she’s not allowed to come back in because of what happened. He again offers his friendship to her and tells her she can come to him with any problems or questions. I don’t know if friendship is all he wants but sure, Qingheng.

Husui does have a question about a Soul-Gathering Lamp but when Qingheng said he doesn’t know what it is and will ask around for it, she brushes it off and tells him to forget about it. These two always have the most awkward conversations, I swear. And that’s saying a lot if you’ve seen the other couples. True, awkwardness is the soul of this drama.

One day, Youqin’s mother, the queen, comes by to visit. She walks in on Youqin and Yetan when they are fighting. Any typical drama mom would frown at her daughter-in-law for causing that much noise around her son, but the queen is actually happy!

Alas, somebody has finally made Youqin show expressions other than “polite” and “don’t touch me”, this pleases the queen so much that she arranges a date for them.

On the day of a meteor shower, the queen and Youqin’s siblings cooperate to send Yetan to him.

The three funny deities who gambled also help. They turn on romantic lights and make flower petals shower down on the reluctant couple. Huh, seems like nobody cares about the whole “immortals should not fall in love” rule. They want to see their crown prince kiss and they want to see it now.

These people are not very subtle, however. Their little scheme is exposed by Youqin right away and he grabs Yetan and flies.
