‘The Starry Love’: Ep. 40 Recap [Finale] — Feed Those Flowers

EPISODE 40

Husui gets struck by the magic shooting out of the black hole and dies as Yetan struggles to free herself.

When Yetan gets close to the plant-Qingkui, however, she begins to see things: snippets and shorts collected by Qingkui’s spirit — during her time floating in between realms — telling Yetan what to do to save the world.

And what does Yetan have to do? Sacrificing herself along with Qingkui to push the evil force back. Turns out, the entire world got it all wrong. According to the first king of the heaven, the power the two princesses have is meant to fight evil, not release evil.

So let me get this straight. The first Heaven King discovered a source of power to protect world peace, but somehow, when it’s passed down to the later generations, it becomes “the destroyer of peace”? Maybe the Heaven tribe needs better note-takers.

Youqin jumps into the black hole to get Yetan out. Outside, their friends are doing their best to contain the bad magic from spreading.

Halfway out, Yetan takes one last look at Youqin then pushes him away and flies back in. She explains to her friends what she has to do and says goodbye. And Chaofeng is like, hey hey do what you want but leave Qingkui!

Okay, he doesn’t say that, but his face definitely says it.

Everyone goes home, Youqin cries his inside out later. Hmm, who would win this “my girlfriend just died” crying contest, I wonder. Youqin or Dongfang from Fairy and Devil?

Chaofeng fares a little better. He’s been through this before, after all. Also, having Wudai around during this time is a huge plus. He calls Chaofeng out for having no goals in life anymore. If only someone could tell Youqin this too. When Wudai offers Chaofeng a big brotherly hug, it scares Chaofeng so much that he gets off his butt and starts working right away.

But we don’t get to reflect on Yetan and Qingkui’s noble sacrifice for long because surprise, Youqin’s father has a way to bring the two princesses back. The dude has been wandering around with unkempt hair lately, pondering over his past mistakes.

According to the Heaven King – who is still Heaven King for some reason, even though he has lost ALL his magical powers – if we rebuild the clan of Dongqiu and replant all the trees, the twins’ scattered spirits will be pulled back; and the good energy of Dongqiu will nurture them until they are strong enough to take human form.

It’s such a 180 change from the Heaven King that even Youqin is like, what has this guy been smoking?

But they execute the plan anyway, and it seems to work.

Dongqiu is revived. One day, the two Princess Flowers bloom again. Youqin and Chaofeng don’t know what to do but boy, are we lucky to have the three friendly deities around. They have all the necessary info at hand.

All we have to do is some blood-feeding so the flowers can grow. Cross blood-feeding, actually.

Because of a little issue of energy compatibility, Youqin will have to feed his blood to Qingkui and Chaofeng will feed Yetan.

You know, the scandalous tone of this totally makes me root for another season. Who’s to say that the twins’ memories will be intact when they return? So, what if Yetan comes back and falls in love with Chaofeng and Qingkui finds Youqin hot? ‘Cause we all know what blood-feeding means! Hua Qiangu, Moyuan and Bai Qian, etc.

This is way more interesting than it needs to be. *evil laugh*

By the way, this is where the drama ends. Qingheng is set to become the Heaven King. Dilanjue and Ziwu are happily married, Wudai is starting to warm up to the Snake Princess, and Husui is no longer around to rain on anyone’s parade.

COMMENTS

I used to expect sacrifices to be permanent so that their impact on the story can be meaningful, But if I complain about dead characters coming back to life, I’d have to complain about every single fantasy C-drama out there, so forget it. Overall, it’s a satisfying conclusion.

Of course, the arc that leads to this conclusion is problematic, but that will be a topic for the final review. For now let’s just celebrate the fact that none of the beloved minor characters who have brought plenty of fun to the story dies (except Manman).
