‘The Starry Love’: Ep. 39 Recap — You Had One Job, Chaofeng

EPISODE 39

Qingheng is a little worried about Husui – as anyone would be – but they are all happy in general because the Heavenly King is no longer causing trouble.

Sushui is touched by Qingheng’s concern for Husui and wonders whether she would ever meet a man who would care about her the same way.

Haichao responds that some people are too blind to see what’s in front of them. Wait… hang on a minute here! Is Haichao suggesting that he’s available for dating?? Haichao? The rogue who only cares about Chaofeng and food?

Well, this is just good news on another level. Give me Haichao and Sushui this instant! I’d take them over Youqin’s wontons any day.

Anyway, Husui seeks out Qingheng for a talk. She returns the robe he lent her some time ago and bids him farewell, putting on an unconvincing face of happiness and forgiveness.

Chaofeng has been reading up on plants and flowers a lot these days. Yetan visits him one day to express her wish to leave, she’s tired and wants no more of this so how about they get Wudai back to be King of the Void. Taking over an entire kingdom in two minutes, using its armies for revenge and then giving them back like toys. Only in romance dramas.

Chaofeng is surprised and sad to learn that Yetan doesn’t want to be the leader of the Void anymore. Why, though? Chaofeng has wanted that position all his life. Now he has a chance to seize it and make sure the Void is under good leadership. Why is he acting like Yetan is the best thing that could happen to the Void? She isn’t. Yetan is cool but she has no idea how to govern and doesn’t even want to.

Husui visits Chaofeng later on and says she has some tips that might help him take better care of plant-Qingkui.

Okay let me write that stuff down! Chaofeng is excited and orders Haichao to go get him some papers and ink.

Chaofeng waits for about one minute and is like, what is taking so long? I’ll just leave the important flower that contains the spirit of my dead girlfriend exposed here and go get some papers myself.

Off he goes. The writers who cared about logic had all left the show at this point, I’m sure of it.

Then, of course, Husui takes the flower and puts a fake one on the plant

Later that day, Chaofeng finds out that the real flower is missing. He calls for Haichao and together they use their heads again. Thank god.

It takes them about one minute to figure out who took the flower, eliminate the unlikely scenarios, and guess what’s going to happen next. You know, if all this brainwork was employed sooner, as it should, Husui would never have the chance to cause any trouble.

Yetan accompanies Husui to Dongqiu, which is where Husui said she would live from now on. Note that Dongqiu is not even a “place” right now, it’s a wasteland with the worst weather, no food, no LIGHT, and no sign of life. Just look at it…

So when someone says oh I want to live here, you would think that at least one of our smart protagonists would question that person’s sanity and intention. But no, no one did, not even Yetan.

She walks deep into Dongqiu with Husui. When they hug goodbye, Husui stabs her and releases both of her and plant-Qingkui’s power. A black hole is activated.

Yetan is shocked, she tries to talk sense into Husui, mentioning how this would break Qingheng’s heart. She has very good points, but good grief… talking to Husui is like arguing with the writer herself/himself. A writer who is already determined to doom these last episodes.
