‘The Starry Love’: Ep. 17 Recap — We Need Some Rain

Poor the immortal envoy who got sent to the mortal world to make rain. He has no idea about the amount of craziness he is about to endure.

EPISODE 17

Due to an item Ziwu possesses, the Beast King and Queen figures out right away that she must be a princess from the Heaven Kingdom. They quickly change their attitude and set her up with Dilanjue.

Yetan, Qingheng, and Manman have thought of a way to help Lamu control the Heaven Fire that is threatening to burn the entire area. The Heaven Kingdom usually sends people down to bless the mortal world with rains around this time of year, so if the gang can get their hands on the magic item that calls upon rain, they can use it to tame the Fire.

So, on that day, Yetan and Qingheng sneak in to prevent Yetan’s father from meeting the immortal envoy on time. Manman poses as the king and will try to steal the magic water bottle they need.

It sounds like a risky plan, but we already know the level of caution these people possess, so just sit back and enjoy the comedy that will happen as Yetan waltzes towards her goal.

What we do need to worry about is: will the innocent people get dragged into these crazy schemes? Well, some of them do.

The Heaven Envoy will never forget the bizarre welcome he gets or how the king is jumpy like a little girl; officials and soldiers get yelled at for no reason; old servants have to run marathons they didn’t sign up for; and Yetan’s father will always be remembered as the king who wets his ceremonial robe, thanks to Manman and the water that she spills.

They get the magic water in the end.

Meanwhile, Chaofeng and Haichao are circling the outskirts of the city to find Youqin. They’re a bit behind schedule and Haichao isn’t happy about it.

You had to bring her back to the inn, you had to take care of her, you had to put food and clothes out for her and now we’re late, late, late! Haichao nags.

Chaofeng doesn’t care. He seems to enjoy being hindered by Qingkui.

A bit later, they find Lamu. Chaofeng charges forward and is about to kill Lamu when Qingkui appears out of nowhere to stop him.

HAICHAO: (to Qingkui’s maid) How could you let her come here?

No no, Haichao, how did YOU let Qingkui get that close to Chaofeng without stopping her? You were keeping watch and you let a girl with no combat skills whatsoever fling her arms around a warrior who is about to deliver a deadly blow?

Qingkui begs Chaofeng not to kill Youqin. Without Youqin to protect the world, the Void King will wage war on all the realms. She makes perfect sense.

But Chaofeng needs to do this in order to become the Crown Prince. The Void Kingdom is ruthless and only with the power of the crown can Chaofeng protect his mother and Qingkui. He needs power in order to stop power from being abused. He makes sense too! I can’t decide whose side to take.

Although, there are two instances where both Qingkui and Chaofeng don’t make a lot of sense.

Qingkui is determined that if Chaofeng rides this out, he will become a ruthless tyrant just like his father, and that she is the only one who cares to save him from possible tragedy. Hmm, you don’t know that. It’s been implied many times that what Chaofeng cares most about is his mother’s welfare and we can see that the people who work for Chaofeng are kind at the core. Just because he fights for the throne doesn’t mean he is destined to embrace tyranny and bloodshed.

Chaofeng comments that Qingkui cares about Yetan and the soul pieces, but she doesn’t care about his feelings. Dude, if your feelings are what need to be satisfied here, then maybe you do need to step back.
