EPISODE 33 RECAP
Xiaoyanzi loves her new rooster so much that she lets it sleep in her room that night.
But the gamblers from the cockfight are still bitter about losing that rooster so they sneak into the girls’ room and steal it back. They even take all of the girls’ money pouches and clothes. I guess that on the bright side, they still leave each of the girls a set of clothes to change into in the morning.
The next morning, Xiaoyanzi is livid. That was a lot of money that they lost.
As they all head out, Xiaojian and the boys figure they should probably assign guard duty at night, no matter where they sleep. Well, it’s as they say: you gotta leave the nest to learn.
Everyone agrees to let the rooster incident go but Xiaoyanzi doesn’t, she throws a tantrum — that would’ve earned the character major hate if it hadn’t been performed by Vicky Zhao — and tries to make Yongqi take her back to the city to take back their money. Yongqi and Erkang say no. Xiaojian once again steps up to resolve the problem.
Let’s do what you want, Xiaoyanzi, he says and pulls her onto his horse, which I don’t think Yongqi enjoys watching.
But the dashing Xiaojian guarantees Xiaoyanzi’s safety, so what can poor Yongqi do?
While Xiaojian and Xiaoyanzi deal with the gamblers, Erkang brings the gang’s attention to an important matter: what to do if, for one reason or another, they get separated on the way.
The solution they come to is simple: leave messages and signs on trees and buildings. to let the rest of the group know where they’re heading next. So now each of them chooses a symbol for him/herself. Like a secret signature.
Most of the crew pick something that represent their names or personality, and here is when we find out Erkang’s real personality: he picks the smiley face as his symbol. Never once in my life had I ever associated Erkang with a smiley face, but here we have it. I’m surprised, but in a good way.
When Xiaoyanzi is back in the carriage, Ziwei and Jinsuo advise her to maintain her distance from Xiaojian and this and that, but of course Xiaoyanzi doesn’t understand anything at all. I don’t think girl has processed that she and Yongqi are an item.
That night, they stop and rest at an abandoned house on the road. The gang once again can’t help being heroic and give all of their spare clothes and beddings to the beggars who live here. At this rate, they’ll run out of money in a week.
At the end of this episode, we see an important and positive development. Liu Qing and Jinsuo are definitely giving each other signals.
