‘Love Between Fairy & Devil’: Ep. 25 Recap – Awkward Weddings

Quippe: Welcome to the 25th recap of Love Between and Devil. Joining us on this journey is Dew, who is nicer to Dongfang Qingcang than I am and will definitely make these “Unhelpful” Recaps more helpful.

Dew: Hi Quippe Readers! Or Questees? Do we like that? I’m throwing it in the Goblet of Recap Readers Names and crossing my fingers. Can’t wait to jump into this ep so grab your popcorn, make sure your eyesight is 20/20 and let’s get into this wedding.😈

*Devy = Devil = Dongfang Qingcang

We open with the wedding prep in full-blown production and everyone is involved including Jieli and Shangque. SQ is unfamiliar with human wedding customs and wonders about the meaning of beans and a saddle. They’re for warding off evil and signifying safety, Jieli explains. Well, who’s going to tell the happy couples that those are the two things we’re not expecting to see this wedding night? Not me. More beans and saddles, please!

SQ, completely casual and with no hidden meaning at all, shares that in his culture, the dragon scrapes off his hardest scale, aka armor, and gives it to his beloved as a symbol of love and note here – vulnerability. I like that. Clear and literal. Cue dragon love stare, pew-pew, and 1 ton of guilt bricks falling on Jieli, boom-boom. Oh boy, we’re one step closer to that heartbreak, aren’t we.

Orchid and Wanqing both get ready for their “weddings” that night. Orchid is a little dejected because she’s starting to think of Wanqing as a friend and feels guilty about lying to her. Devy wanders to the same part of the mansion and meets Orchid there. Same here, he says. He also feels guilty about lying to mortal-Changheng. They both decide to value their last days in the mortal realm together before getting back to their pointless… never-dying lives or something like that.

Just give me the sign, I’ll call for more beans and saddles.

Dayin returns to the mortal realm by the Heaven Lord’s command to bring Changheng back. But she wants to make sure Changheng passes his trial first.

She gets grabbed by Changheng and pulled into helping him get ready for the wedding. While helping him change, my girl sees the chance for a back hug, and she takes it. Respect. But it’s a sad hug filled with conflicted emotion on knowing what needs to happen tonight. Changheng of course takes it as her feeling worried she’d be third-wheeling once he’s married and promises that won’t happen and he’ll find her a bride too.

Dayin is supposed to be a boy in this mortal trial, though, so that back hug must confuse Changheng big time.

Note to self: Make sure to survive your own wedding with a bride who’s trying to figure out the best way to lead you to your death before making promises to pimp your bro, who’s really another undercover immortal fairy, who’s also trying to find the best way to let you die. He drops something that belongs to Orchid and asks Dayin to return it to her.

Dayin comes to talk to Orchid about the plan. Orchid is overjoyed to see someone from the Heaven, she’s even glad to see Dayin’s sneers and dirty looks; the girl has been away from home for too long.

But Dayin gets straight to the point: What is the plan? Turns out, Orchid and Devy don’t have one. They plan to make it up as they go.

According to what’s written in the Destiny Books, Changheng needs to kill his bride (Wanqing) on their wedding day. But the current Changheng, as we all know, wouldn’t (and couldn’t) hurt a fly. So what to do?

Dayin rolls her eyes at this lack of preparation and comes up with a plan herself. When Changheng and Wanqing are in the same room, she would jump in, take Orchid hostage and force Changheng to kill Wanqing. Orchid is shocked by this ruthless suggestion, but she agrees to go along. They are immortals on a mission, after all. And the sooner they succeed, the sooner they can say goodbye to the goofy Changheng and get the hot version of him back. Dayin likes that, anyway.

At this time, Ronghao walks in. This can’t be good.

The two girls are happy to see him, they still think he’s a source of help. Ronghao points out to Orchid that they need to contain Devy after the trial is finished because Devy’s intention is to take Lady Chidi’s power for himself. And that means his power will get upgraded somehow and the rock music that plays every time he uses Hellfire is going to play even harder when he’s in action, I guess.

Devy can Led-Zeppelin his way into a battle scene to save me from slo-mo any day. Rock on Devy!!

Ronghao gives Orchid a bottle of potion and asks her to find a way to make Devy take some of it. She promises to try, but Ronghao knows better than to place all his eggs in one basket. The real weapon against Devy is in a little pearl Orchid wears in her hair, which he has injected dark magic in.

Another layer of hidden motives and secret missions added and everything calls for an edge-of-your-seat moment. Weddings can never be a simple event in fantasy stories and this one is not going to disappoint. Everyone, grab onto your beans and saddles.

Wedding time! Changheng and Wanqing are shocked to discover they’ve been paired up with the wrong people. Orchid and Devy, on the other hand, sit together in their wedding outfits. Both privately pretending that they’re actually getting married, I assume. Orchid is extremely honest, she asks Devy whether he still intends to attack her home realm. He also honestly says: you bet I will.

The tribes’ history of hatred is too deep and Devy can’t have any reason to hesitate to destroy whatever necessary to bring back his people and keep them safe.

Now, Changheng and Wanqing both walk out and about to find out what’s going on; and all kinds of magic happen at the same time, not all of it good.

Orchid can’t bring herself to poison Devy. Cue Ronghao’s plan B: the pearl.

The pearl in Orchid’s hair explodes, trapping Devy in poisonous smoke. Wanqing is possessed and runs Changheng through with a sword. Dayin goes crazy because — how can the people around her be so useless??

Chaos erupts, and we’re about to see who can shoot CG lights the fastest.

Can someone ask Jieli if we kept the receipts for the beans and saddles?
