EPISODE 21 RECAP
The gross chess couple gets investigated and sentenced to exile for their crimes. The emperor lets the kids take a day off to go out and watch those two getting eggs and rotten veggies thrown at them.
Ziwei is the only one who looks uncomfortable with this scene, the rest of them have the time of their lives.
Yongqi even prepares a tray of chess pieces for Xiaoyanzi to throw at them. Why, you two adorable little devils.
On that same day, they eat at the Liu siblings’ restaurant. Here is when we meet a new character: a mysterious man who carries a flute and a sword around and recites funny poetry as he gets drunk.
Erkang is like: drunken poetry, interesting, let’s make friends with him.
The gang goes over to greet the man, but he refuses to give his real name and instead gives them a nickname: Xiaojian. Literally Flute and Sword.
While everyone is entranced by his mysteriousness, Xiaoyanzi has a better idea. She snatches his sword and bolts, making the man run after her and beg for his possession back.
All the while, the guys stand on the side and debate whether this Xiaojian man is a wimp for real or only hiding his martial talents.
In the end, they stop Xiaoyanzi and ask Xiaojian to join them for a chat.
Back at home, the gang has a great time deciding who Xiaojian really is and his intentions with those weird poems he recited.
Ziwei believes Xiaojian is definitely a unique character. He wants their attention, hence the poetry, but he refuses to give away too much about himself, which invites more interaction. This smart analysis amazes Erkang so much that he starts gazing at Ziwei with overflowing love.
During their conversation, Jinsuo reminds Xiaoyanzi not to bother with someone else’s business, they already have too much on their plate right now. Which is sensible advice, I guess. But Xiaoyanzi jokes that Jinsuo is becoming too naggy and she won’t make a great wife to Erkang like that. Ooooh… worm can opened.
Ziwei and Erkang step out to talk. Ziwei doesn’t want to break the news to Jinsuo that Erkang just has no heart for her. Erkang is like: tragedy, tragedy, why must I be so attractive?
Jinsuo stands nearby and accidentally hears the whole thing. It’s kind of a train-wreck I’m rooting for.
Erkang runs after Jinsuo to explain. He tries to comfort Jinsuo by reaching for her shoulders from the back like he tried to do with Ziwei once. You know, classic Erkang. Good thing he doesn’t go through with it this time.
He wants Jinsuo to know that they are thinking for her and wants what’s best for her, aka not Erkang. But she can’t process that yet, which leads to some intense weeping and self-doubt.
But thankfully, it doesn’t last very long. Jinsuo and Ziwei make up soon afterwards.
